ABOUT THIS PRINT
Saint Anthony the Great was known for his ascetic feats. While living in the desert, he suffered from visions and temptations from the devil, so he tied a rope with a knot to focus his mind and pray “Lord Have Mercy” during the attacks. The devil kept coming to him and untying the knots, so St Anthony began tying the knots in such a way that the knots themselves would make the sign of the cross. The devil could not touch the prayer knots because the devil is vanquished by the sign of the cross. To this day, Orthodox prayer ropes use knots that contain seven small crosses tied over and over.
